First off, I'd like to say thank-you to whoever is here and reading.
I'm really enjoying my experiences as an 'entrepreneur' and appreciate everyone's support and feedback.
As I was preparing this post, which is planned to be a regular update on the progress we are making with the Meal Garden system and the things we are incorporating based on all of the feedback we've been receiving, I found myself reflecting on how I got here in the first place. I spent so much time thinking about this, I thought it would be appropriate to start at the beginning.
My wife (and co-founder) is a nutrition scientist. She's Italian-born and loves to cook. Over the years, Livia has shared much about nutrition and the science of food - teaching me that you can create equally delicious AND healthy meals. I've learned that minor modifications to almost any recipe can make it healthy. For me, this practice became second nature.
I guess I began to take healthy eating for granted.
This became clear to me during a nutrition educational session at my previous employer. Towards the end of the session a dialogue about 'what we normally eat' began and I asked a young mom about her comment 'We normally just eat pizza'.
She became quite emotional describing her long hours at work, long commute, homework, dealing with issues at school – the list of obstacles can go on. It was clear that I'd accidentally touched on something. She wasn't happy that her family 'normally just eats pizza', but in her busy life, she didn't see an alternative.
This stuck with me, and over the following few months I made a point of asking friends and family members who had young children how they balanced the challenges of 'busy lives' with 'eating healthy' and it became clear just how difficult this can be.
With all the amazing things that technology has done for society, it perplexed me that we hadn't designed a system to effectively fulfil the most basic of our needs – fuel our body properly. This did not make sense to me. So, I started working on Meal Garden.
I've learned some valuable lessons along the way and assume I will continue to make some mistakes, but everyday I feel like I'm one step closer to my original vision: applying the principles of Enterprise Technology to help people manage everything related to food.
The goals of most technologies designed for businesses include: automating tasks and integrating disparate systems: reducing steps, paperwork, and manual processes. Also, businesses routinely apply algorithms to complex decisions and consolidate their data to improve reporting and analysis. These efforts result in extraordinary savings. Beyond the financial benefits, they free up time for people to focus on more meaningful tasks.
To me, applying these same principles to the management of family meals and health can result in the same type of benefits: savings in time and money, improved health and, most importantly, more time to spend on meaningful tasks (or, time for you and your family).
