Show Notes:
1:02 - Why writing a stellar professional bio is important
“Bios, like anything in your brand and anything in your business, (and I love personal branding and all that stuff, because it's how you show the world who you are.) It's how you use your voice to do that […] the world doesn't know about until you show them.
People can't wait to see the inside of your brain. They can't wait to see who you are and we love learning about each other. And, a bio is a really powerful way.
A lot of people think a bio is, “let me give you all my credentials”, and that's not what it's about. It's about showing the world who you are and what you're the most proud of and not being so secretive about how fabulous you are.
I always say, you're fabulous. Stop being so secretive about it and just share it.”
3:49 - How health practitioners and coaches should approach their own bio
“It is a mindset. It's how to get out of the mindset that sharing things that you're really proud of is bragging and getting out of the mindset that being seen means being judged. Honestly, we're not in control of what other people think about us […] So it doesn't matter. What do you think of you? It doesn't matter if other people like your business or it doesn't matter if other people like what you're doing, it matters that you do.
And, a lot of times it's getting out of the mindset of, I have to prove, I have to impress, I have to justify. Imposter syndrome is how do I justify that I'm allowed in the room? How do I justify that I'm okay at being in the space? How do I justify that people can pay me?
And so, it's about getting out of the two sides of the spectrum of, oh my gosh, if I'm too loud about who I am, what will people say? And if I don't know my shit, what will people say? And so, I teach the mindset:
- Know your shit
- Know yourself
Knowing your shit doesn't mean you have to know everything. It just means you have to know what you know. And, you have to own the fact that you know it.”
6:31 - The importance of confidence while writing your bio
“When I was writing my book and I was writing my book proposal, I went through this 10 day book proposal course. I would highly recommend anyone do this if you're wanting to write a book. It's from Jen Sincero, who wrote You Are About Us. And, she talked about bio's and she's like, when you pitch your book, you have to pretend you're going to the New York Times, and you're like, "This is going to be a best seller, bitches."
Dani wants us to take that mindset into our bios: “This is me. I’m going to be a bestseller. I have no doubt."
9:07 - Getting to the bottom of WHY you do what you do.
“A lot of us go in saying, “I want to change the industry that I'm in.” I want to change the way people see health. I want to change the way people take care of their body. I want to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
I went in for a reason and I have so much more to offer than just my degree. And, I can list off all these different courses and all the different programs that I've taken, but it doesn't matter. What matters is why I'm doing it, and what qualifies me to do it.”
10:26 - Questions to ask yourself before writing your bio
“When I do bios of people, I like to break it down and this is how I broke it down for myself. I like to break it down with:
- What are your experiential credentials? (What is my experience with this?)
- Why did I do this?
- What are you so proud of?
- What do you need people to know about you?
- Who are you actually speaking to?
“When we own who we are, it brings other people to the awareness that they're going to own who they are and it inspires them and lets them elevate, and then we all change the landscape together.”
20:00 - How to start writing your bio based on the questions you asked yourself
“You can write it down. I like using highlighters and making it super fun, like a little art project. Then, you can cut them out and stuff like that. And then, when you have all that together, you can start stringing together sentences and just play with it. Say it out loud. Write it down.”
22:12 - How long should your professional bio be?
“Honestly, I like just one paragraph of your juiciest, most bad-ass stuff. And, if you want to write a super lengthy one and then cut it down after, do it. If you want to put both on your site, do it. A lot of people have different options of full length and then mini bio. And, I have option A and option B depending on, people want to know more about my book or if people want to know more about my voice work and stuff like that. But, you just get to decide who am I writing for? Who am I showing this to? And, how do I want them to feel when they read it?”
